A Golden Hills Family Portrait: The Rodriguez Family Story
When Paloma Rodriguez reached out to me about booking her family portraits, she admitted something so many moms feel but rarely say out loud:
“With seven little ones under the age of 10, I just didn’t think family photos were possible. It felt too overwhelming.”
As a mom myself, I completely understood her hesitation. Getting kids dressed, wrangled, and smiling for the camera can feel like an impossible task. But here’s the truth—family portraits don’t have to be stressful. In fact, they can be fun, relaxed, and even joyful, no matter how big your crew is.
Why the Golden Hills Were the Perfect Backdrop
The Rodriguez family chose the rolling Golden Hills of California for their portraits, and it was pure magic. The warm, sunlit grasses set against the rugged hills gave their portraits that iconic “California cool” feel. We created three distinct looks in just one hour—plenty of variety while still keeping the session short enough for the kids’ attention spans.
Preparing for a Family of Nine
Paloma worried about how to prepare everyone, but with some simple planning tips and my background in photographing large groups (years of wedding experience + my time at a national portrait studio), we created a session plan that worked beautifully:
- Coordinated outfits, not matching – Soft neutrals with pops of denim and boots tied everyone together while still letting each child’s personality shine.
- Full tummies + small breaks – Snacks and water breaks helped keep the kids happy and ready for the next shot.
- Playful prompts – Instead of stiff poses, we focused on movement, laughter, and family connection.
The Result: Smiles, Variety, and a Stress-Free Experience
Photographing seven children under ten takes patience and skill, but it’s one of my specialties. With each frame, we captured natural smiles, sibling bonds, and the joy that radiates when a family comes together.
Paloma left her session saying she finally had the long overdue family portraits she had dreamed of—without the stress she feared.
A Note to Moms Who’ve Been Waiting
If you’ve been putting off family portraits because it feels too overwhelming, I want you to know—it doesn’t have to be. With preparation, experience, and a little bit of playfulness, even the busiest families can walk away with timeless portraits they’ll treasure forever.
The Rodriguez family’s Golden Hills portraits are proof that yes, it can be done—and beautifully.
