Inspired Guide to Choosing Beautiful Spring Outfits for Your Family Portrait Session & Mini Session
Spring is one of my favorite seasons to photograph—soft breezes, new blooms, and that fresh sense of possibility in the air. It’s also the perfect time to lean into a style that feels timeless, elegant, and effortlessly polished. When clients ask me how to elevate their spring family portraits, I often point them toward the classic, heritage-inspired world of Ralph Lauren.
Think: refined, natural, warm, and beautifully curated—without ever feeling fussy.
Whether you’re dreaming of portraits in a blooming field, a rustic estate, or a bright garden pathway, here’s how to create a Ralph Lauren–inspired wardrobe that photographs beautifully and tells your family’s story with sophistication and heart.
1. Start With a Soft, Classic Spring Color Palette
Ralph Lauren’s spring looks often feature tones that feel clean and organic. Color palette
Pick 3–5 tones and stick to them:
- Whites & creams (fabric textures will be key when picking these two colors)
- Soft blues (Aqua, sky blue & light denim)
- Pinks (Rose, & ballerina pink)
- Peaches (Golden apricots, & Coral)
- Yellows (Buttercup & daffodil)
- Ivory, sand, taupe, and warm neutrals
- A hint of navy for grounding
These colors look incredible on camera, mix well across family members, and create that breezy, elegant spring aesthetic.
Pro Tip: Avoid overly bright neon colors—they break the calm, classic mood and can reflect on the skin in photos.
2. Choose Fabrics That Flow and Photograph Well
Ralph Lauren's style is all about texture and movement. Spring is the perfect season for:
- Cotton and linens
- Light knits
- Eyelet or embroidered dresses
- Flowy chiffon skirts
- Twill or tailored chinos
These materials add dimension without bulk and bring a gentle, romantic movement into your portraits—especially in outdoor settings.
3. Lean Into Classic Silhouettes
For women:
- Midi or maxi dresses
- Peasant sleeves
- A-line or wrap dresses
- Soft floral prints
- Neutral-toned cardigans
For men:
- Tailored chinos or khaki trousers
- Button-downs in white, chambray, or pastel tones
- Lightweight sweaters layered over a collared shirt
- A relaxed blazer for a more polished look
For children:
- Linen rompers
- Simple sun dresses
- Knit sweaters
- Soft cotton button-ups
- Neutral-toned cardigans or little boat shoes
Think: classic, comfortable, and tasteful—not trendy or overly matchy.
4. Coordinate, Don’t Match
One hallmark of Ralph Lauren styling is harmony without uniformity. Your family shouldn’t all wear the exact same shade.
Instead, choose a color story—for example, soft blues, creams, and tan—and build around it.
Here’s how:
- Pick one outfit first (usually Mom’s dress).
- Pick one person to have an outfit with a pattern. This person will be the spotlight in every photo. Due to them wearing a pattern.
- Pull 2–3 supporting colors that complement the main piece.
- Mix in textures (linen + cotton + knit).
- Keep patterns minimal—maybe one soft floral or stripe, and keep the rest solid.
This creates visual cohesion and looks beautifully elevated in photographs.
Pro Tip: One person is allowed to wear a pattern, and only one person is allowed to wear a hat.
5. Add Thoughtful, Understated Accessories
Accessories can transform a simple outfit into a Ralph Lauren moment.
Consider:
- Leather belts in tan or chestnut
- Suspenders: leather or elastic. (everybody should have the same color of suspenders)
- Subtle gold jewelry
- Straw hats or woven textures for outdoor sessions
- Soft scarves for breezy days
- Classic loafers, flats, or ankle boots
For kids:
- Bows in natural tones
- Knit knee socks
- Soft-soled leather shoes
Choose accessories that feel intentional but never overpower the portrait.
6. Think About Layers for Depth
Spring weather can change quickly. Adding layers also gives you more styling options during the session.
Try:
- Light trench coats
- Cardigans
- Draped shawls
- Soft neutral sweaters
- Denim jackets in a very light wash (sparingly)
Layers add visual richness and give your session that editorial, Ralph Lauren–inspired charm.
7. Stay True to You—But Elevate the Everyday
The best family portraits feel authentic. Ralph Lauren style isn’t about dressing in costume—it’s about refining what you already love.
Ask yourself:
- Does this feel like us?
- Is it comfortable enough to move in?
- Will these colors look beautiful in our home?
When your wardrobe feels true to your family, your portraits radiate warmth, connection, and ease.
